About

The P2 Project supports climate scientists in their efforts, both individually and collectively, to engage constructively with pension funds on the risks and opportunities presented by the climate crisis. The purpose of these dialogues is to help pension funds integrate the most accurate climate change information into investment analyses thereby providing the signals that are required for pension funds to manage their capital with climate change mitigation and adaptation in mind

Why climate scientists? Decades of study and analysis have given climate scientists valuable insights into the implications of climate change. However, to date, there has been very little direct interaction between climate scientists and pension fund decision-makers to identify the kind of scientific information that is relevant and applicable to quantitative and qualitative investment analysis.

Pension funds invest contributions for their plan members. Their job is to create the highest possible value for pensions, guaranteeing a secure future for their members and beneficiaries. Pension funds are strategic economic players because they control a vast portion of the world’s capital. Assets of the world’s 300 largest pension funds are estimated at more than US$20 trillion. Pension fund investments, because of their massive size and scope, quite literally have the power to shape the future.

Through dialogues with pension funds, climate scientists can help to ensure that the most accurate climate information is being incorporated into investment decision-making processes – providing the signals that are required for pension funds to manage their capital with climate change mitigation and adaptation in mind. The P2 Project has enormous potential to contribute to a fundamental shift in pension fund investment practices that will help move the world closer to sustainability while at the same time protecting pension benefits.
